Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course will give the students a knowledge of the mechanism of text transmission and a basical competence of the steps necessary to make a critical edition. The students will be also called, in itinere, to examine some exemplar cases, in order to apply the critical notions received through frontal lessons. By the end of the course they are expected to have developed the ability to describe, evaluate and interpretate the sources of a text, use in the proper and correct form the terminology of the philological discipline and conduct authonomous research in the philological field.
It is necessary for the student to have a basical knowledge of the history of the italian language and a good knowledge of the history of italian literature
Course contents summary
The course introduces to the knowledge of the basical principles of the philological work. The first lessons will focus on a short history of philology, while the central part of the course is dedicated to the methodology and to the instruments necessary to make a critical edition, going through each stage: from the description of the manuscript to the collation, and the formalization of the critical apparatus, with particular regard to the most recent editions of the poetry of the XII and XIII centuries and to the critical debate on them.

The classroom work consists of frontal lectures and practical exercise focusing on reading and transcribing manuscripts, particularly important in the history of italian literature, such as the manuscripts of the poetry of XII and XIII centuries. The student will be called to employ the notions learned in the frontal lessons.The course will also be offered in a blended way on the distance learning platform called Elly.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam consists of an oral proof in which the student will demonstrate his knowledge of the main problems of the making of a critical edition and his competence on philological terminology. The questions will deal as much with the more technical and methodogical aspects as with the competence to place the texts in their historical and literary context. The student who does not demonstrate the comprehension of the specific aspects of philological work or is unable to place the texts studied into their proper historical and literary context will be considered insufficient. On the final evaluation will be considered: sufficient (18-21) the student able to manage properly the concepts and terms of the discipline, quite good or good (22-26) the student who demonstrates an autonomous ability of reflection, very good (27-30 with laude) the student who will have improved his knowledge through the study and analysis of critical editions.
