Learning outcomes of the course unit
The student will be able to analyze and critically evaluate an intervention of upgrading the energy efficiency of a building, as well as to design some simple solutions that will allow a reduction of primary energy consumption, in accordance with the characteristics of the building on which it is addressed.
Knowledge and understanding capabilities:
At the end of the course, the student will have a complete picture of the different possible approaches to enehance the enrgy performances of existing buildings, to be chosen depending on the multiple values involved and of the different possible concernes.
The student will be able to analyze and critically assess an intervention to enhance the buildings energy performances, and to design some simple solutions for the reduction of energy consumption, in the respect of the main values of the existing building.
It is necessary to know the fundamental aspects of Applied Physics
Course contents summary
The Final Synthesis Laboratory in Building Reuse and Energy Retrofit is composed of several modules, in the fields of Restoration, Architectural Technology, Technical Physics and Architectural Composition.
More specifically, the Laboratory is composed of the following modules:
- Reuse of existing buildings
- Materials and technical solutions
- Buildings’ thermo-physics
All the modules are composed of a theoretical part and of an applied one.
In the second part, the theoretical knowledge acquired is applied to a real building (not necessarily enlisted) to be reused and energy retrofitted. The students will then work in groups, in order to make surveys (in the first part) and acquire all the information useful to define the interventions, later defined in all the material, technological, energetic and composition aspects.
ASHRAE GreenGuide The Design, Construction, and Operation of Sustainable Buildings.
ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small Retail Buildings.
Additional material available in the course’s website.
The course is composed of traditional lectures (taught class), also with Powerpoint presentations, and reviews, mainly in the second period.
Assessment methods and criteria
The single module has no autonomous evaluation, but the learning assessment will be made altogether in the final exam of the Final Synthesis Laboratory in Building Reuse and Energy Retrofit, which consists in an oral examination focused on the practical design case examined
As for all the laboratories, attending the courses is compulsory.
