Course contents summary
Measurements and systems of units.
Testing internal combustion engines: test cells, instruments and procedures.
Measuring forces, torque, angular velocity, power, pressure, temperature, volumes, density. Speed and flow rate measurements in fluids. Heating value and gaseous species concentration measurements.
Pressure diagram, indicators, mep, heat release rate measurements. Fundamentals of road testing of vehicles.
Part load operation. Quantities to be controlled for better performance and lower emissions.
Variable valve timing. Ignition systems. Diesel and gasoline injection systems in an historical perspective.
Pressure charging: supercharging and turbocharging, engine-charger matching.
0D simulation as advanced control tool. Time-varying states in plena/cylinders, quasy-steady analysis of orifices. Filling-emptying method. 1 and 2 zone models for combustion simulation, Wiebe's function.
