Integrated course unit module: HEAD AND NECK DISEASES

Learning objectives

The course is part of the integrated course Otolaryngology of Head and Neck Diseases and aims to enable the student to learn and understand the fundamentals of the etiology , pathogenesis, symptomatology , diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear , nose , pharynx, larynx and hypopharynx . The student gains the ability to use knowledge and understanding in order to identify the correct diagnostic and formulate an adequate , albeit basic, therapeutic plan.

Having successfully completed the pre-clinical Courses.

Course unit content

Otolaryngology (SSD MED/31 , 2 CFU ) . The course aims to address the most important issues in the field of Otolaryngology . The three major chapters of the course , " the ear, nose, larynx ," are offered sequentially. With regard to the otology , the topics are addressed to the basic elements of etiology , diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases , in particular acute and chronic otitis , otosclerosis , Meniere's disease , tumors of the cerebello pontine angle , the childhood deafness , peripheral facial nerve paralysis . The Rhinology tackles inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the nasal cavity , paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx . With regard to inflammatory diseases of the pharynx and larynx, the etiology , diagnosis and treatment especially in children will be discussed. Fundamental lessons on neoplastic diseases of the larynx and hypopharynx , in the various aspects of the epidemiology , predisposing factors , symptoms , diagnosis, and clinical and instrumental treatment of the primary tumor and metastases .

Teaching methods

Oral lesson . The course program is carried out following an introductory logic . The three main chapters of Otolaryngology , namely the ear , nose and larynx , are offered sequentially. The clinical and instrumental semeiotic represents the introduction to the three chapters. Slides show and short films will be played during lessons. The last ten minutes of class are dedicated to the discussion between students and faculty in order to clarify and supplement the subject matter .

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam . In the verification phase , the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic elements of the etiology , pathogenesis, symptomatology , diagnosis and treatment of ENT diseases. Faced with the simulation of a clinical situation , applying the knowledge and understanding , the student must be able to formulate a sufficient diagnostic and therapeutic plan.
