PHYSICS LABORATORY 1 (UNIT 2)
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to provide students with the ability to perform simple laboratory experiments to acquire the experimental data, to make a statistical analysis using Matlab using also evolved fit programs as Minuit or, when required, by performing an harmonic analysis of the data with Fourier transform. The student will be able to properly expose and summarize the results obtained and to make a critical analysis, producing a report suitable to a classrom presentation for each experiment run.
Course contents summary
Running in the Laboratory of the following experiments:
• 1-The physical pendulum
• 2-Rolling on an inclined plane
• 3-The torsion pendulum
• 4-Damped rotational motion
• 5-Stokes' Law
• 6-Resonant forced oscillator
• 7-The Kundt's tube
• 8-Nitrogen calorimeter
• 9-Calibration of the thermocouple.
Treatment in the classroom of the theoretical basis of experiments in the program.
Using Matlab for all operations visualization and analysis of the data obtained.
Acquisition of the results by the PC, the statistical treatment of experimental data, fit the data with the minimization program Minuit, and when prompted, harmonic analysis of the data obtained with the Fourier transform.

Assessment methods and criteria
The final assessment is based on the grades obtained by students for each of the reports of the experiments presented and the mark obtained in the written infra annum test . The final grade is calculated as the average of the evaluation of the first and second part of the course.
