GENERAL PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND EYE DISEASES
Learning outcomes of the course unit
The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the basis of the etiology and pathogenesis of disease processes in general and, in particular, the main pathological situations of ophthalmology. The student, at the end of the course, using the knowledge of anatomy, biology, physiology, pathology and general psychology previously acquired must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about:
- The pathophysiologic phenomena that are at the basis of events related to the ophthalmic pathology
- The causes and consequences of the main syndromes of orthoptic interest
- The causes and consequences of the major diseases of the ocular adnexa
The student also applying the knowledge and understanding acquired, should be able, even collaborating with other professionals, to contribute to the prevention of complications in patient suffering from eye disease, to identify the problems associated with ocular pathology, to cooperate in the most appropriate care plan.

The arguments of the course will focus on content related to the eye and content as part of general pathology:
- Eyelids and Cornea: anatomy and major diseases
- Ptosis, Entropion, Ectropion, Blepharitis
- Vie tear: anatomy and major diseases
- Uveitis: definition and clinical aspects
- Cataract: types and treatment
- Ocular Ultrasound: Principles and pathologies investigated
- Angle-closure glaucoma
- Melanoma of the iris and ciliary body
- Haemostasis and its alterations

Frontal lessons with the interactive use of iconographic material collected in PowerPoint files and assistance during the clinical activity.
During the lessons the issues related to the topics on the agenda will be discussed also through the provision of video, diagrams and simulations of clinical tests. These mainly are intended to provide the opportunity for each student to be able to measure themselves in clinical practice of competence, in developing autonomous mode of execution and problem solving.
Assessment methods and criteria
Verification tests in progress will not be carried out.
Final assessment will be carried out through oral or written exam.
Each student will be directed questions on topics listed in the programs of the two courses. Through questions about the contents of the course it l be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content. Through questions regarding prevention strategies or instrumental evaluation will be determined whether the student has achieved the aim of applying the acquired knowledge. The vote will be decided by mutual agreement between the two teachers of the two courses as the average of two votes, with the possibility to deviate by a maximum of two points of the average of the individual assessments. Praise be proposed for the demonstration of independence of judgment, high communication skills and ability to learn independently.
