Learning objectives

Through an integrated and interdisciplinary approach including history of fashion, architecture, design, and other forms of image recording (photography, film, advertising), the course aims to propose a new and involving model of experience capable to provide students with a precise historical awareness and with independence of judgment.

Course unit content

The course aims to present matters tied to art, fashion and design as an unitary problem. Several protagonists within these fields work in all of them. We will start from the Art Nouveau to analyze the system of space organization related to Futurism, Russian Constructivism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Art Deco, to reach eventually the prêt-à-porter revolution in Milan. We will consider as well the role of the addressee of these messages, and the course will rely on an interdisciplinary approach to these matters, working on several and different sources.

Teaching methods

The key figures of art, fashion, and space design will be analyzed in their relationship with different kind of sources from graphics, photography, painting. Students will be encouraged to deal with the different languages of artworks and they will be allowed to study directly on the original works both of the CSAC collection and of other major Italian archives. Protagonists and scholars from different fields will be involved in lectures.
The students will prepare a paper for the final exam, focused on one of the problems discussed during the course.
