Learning objectives

The course aim, in A) part, to give a basic knowledge, from a linguistic and historical point of view, of Romance philology, necessary for student of Literature considering the relationships with italian medieval literature; the part B) aims to give the students the competence for a deep comprehension of old french literature in its manuscript transmission

Course unit content

Old French Lyric. The course is divided into two parts:
a) Introduction to Romance philology; reading of some old french songs.
B)after an excursus on the provençal origin of lyrics, the ourse will deal with the most outstanding poets in northern France between XII and XIII century. We will read the most representative poems, together with philological and stylistical comments. The course will be coupled with several lessons on old french language

1. C. TAGLIAVINI, Le origini delle lingue neolatine, Bologna, Pàtron: studiare i capp. II, IV, V; leggere (con attenzione, in modo da poterne evidenziare gli elementi principali) il cap. III; del cap. VI vanno studiate bene, oltre alla classificazione generale delle lingue neolatine, 3 lingue a scelta: una lingua iberoromanza (portoghese, catalano o spagnolo), la lingua galloromanza (francese o provenzale) non oggetto del corso monografico, e una delle restanti lingue (ladino, sardo, italiano, dalmatico, rumeno); delle altre lingue basterà una lettura attenta che ne enuclei i tratti più importanti (a livello storico e linguistico).

Teaching methods

Front lessons: reading, translation of old frenc songs; seminars on old french lyrics repertorties, on philological methods, methods and on selected readings of other literary genres (epic, romance)

Assessment methods and criteria

The oral exam consists of questions of 3 kinds:
- test of translation of a text taken from the course;
- test on metrical, linguistical competence;
- test on the literary and historical context.
The 3 sets of questions will equally concur to the final note
