Master of Science in Communication Engineering (Second-cycle degree course)
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Communication Engineering is a two-year graduate course tailored to students who aspire to work in advanced engineering at an international level.
The M.S. in Communication Engineering offers Italian and international students a unique opportunity as it offers the chance to work towards an advanced qualification and also develop language skills throughout the two-year course. On the one hand, it provides sound knowledge and methodology in an area whose current impressive technological innovation is likely to continue for many years to come. On the other, it allows students to improve their command of English in a professional context. Indeed, all lectures and seminars are held in English, so that students may familiarise with the technical terminology, while learning about current technology.
Communication Engineering has a solid tradition at the University of Parma. In the last decades research at the Department of Information Engineering has been active in all three areas of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), namely, Communications, Computer Engineering, Electronics, and related fields. The Department coordinates both advanced research and academic studies. The research activity is carried out by several groups often in collaboration with foreign universities and renowned international institutions. The Department also provides scientific and technical consultancy to companies, firms and public institutions both in Italy and abroad. The M.S. in Communication Engineering was offered in Italian from the early Nineties until recently, in parallel with international-level research in Digital, Wireless and Optical Communications. Since the academic year 2012-2013, the program has been offered entirely in English.
The M.S. in Communication Engineering is designed for candidates from different academic backgrounds and aims to provide a thorough grounding in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The main goal of the course is to provide advanced insight into current ICT technology, while simultaneously emphasizing a methodological approach to the analysis and design of complex systems - an essential skill in a fast moving world.
The first year of the course provides the prospective Communication Engineer with sound fundamental background tools, while at the same time allowing significant space to interdisciplinary learning by giving students the opportunity to attend courses from other programmes such as Engineering or Economics. The second year focuses on specific advanced disciplines within Communication Engineering and a final dissertation. The final examination consists in the public defence of a written theoretical or experimental thesis focusing on a topic consistent with the subjects of the degree course.
All students, both Italian and foreign, will gain advantages in terms of employment. In the contemporary world, advanced knowledge on ICT needs to be complemented by language skills in order to access many professions, and advanced knowledge of English will open up opportunities for young people in Italy and abroad. Graduates will be trained to work in companies competing in the field of global technology, in multinational corporations, European and supranational organizations, and national and regional institutions operating internationally.
