Learning objectives

<br />At the end of the course, the students will be able to: <br /><br /><br />Make complex evaluations on the legal, social, economical and technological issues related to the digital library.<br /><br />Apply their knowledge to a complex context as the e-book in the digital library.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Master basic information skills for accessing and using information in an independent way.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Demonstrate writing skills and group presentation skills.

Prerequisites

<br />Before the course starts, students should have a basic knowledge and master some primary skills on:<br /> <br />Information literacy skills . Searching and using information from data bases and digital resources available at the Library System of Parma University. <br /> <br />The Seminar “From the library to the Net” has been organised to provide the students with the support for the needed Information literacy skills.

Course unit content

<br />The overall aim of the course is to introduce the main issues, trends and social and organisational impact of the digital library, as well as the differences between digital and traditional libraries. The focus will be the Open model of Digital Library, as a model for knowledge sharing.<br />This module,  (5 credits) goes in depth into the issues related to the services in a Digital Library and in particular it focuses on the project, the standards, the management and preservation of digital collections, the social, legal  and economical aspects and the different user scenarios.

Tammaro, Bibliografica, 2000. <br /> <br />Following the schedule each lecture will be connected to some learning materials and readings which students have to study beforehand, in order to participate to the class discussions in an active way. Reading lists and learning materials are available through DSpace (http://dspace-unipr.cilea.it:8080).

Teaching methods

<br />Virtual Class: <br />Each student must enrol in the Nicenet virtual class and partecipate in the discussions <br />Group project: Each student will partecipate in a one of the three groups that will be formed and will be assessed accordino to his/her contribution to the group task (e.g. brainstorming, literature review, editing). Each group will in-depth review the literature currently available on the issue of the e-book regarding one of these three aspects: 1) Metadata, 2) Preservation 3) Copyright.<br />On January, the 26th, the students will present their work during the workshop about “Ebook and copyright”.
