Learning objectives

1 Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione
Il corso introduce temi principali della gnoseologia e discute il ruolo che svolge in diverse tradizioni filosofiche. Ciò permette agli studenti di individuare lo spazio logico in cui il dibattito è situato e lo stato della discussione contemporanea.

2 Capacità di applicare conoscenze e comprensione
Tramite l’analisi di argomenti proposti dai grandi filosofi gli studenti acquisiscono gli strumenti necessari per riconoscere, formulare e criticare argomenti a loro volta. Inoltre imparano a elaborare il proprio apparato concettuale per partecipare a questo dibattito.

3-4 Autonomia di giudizio e abilità comunicative
Gli studenti sono incoraggiati a partecipare in modo attivo alla discussione in aula, a soppesare gli argomenti proposti per arrivare a difendere una posizione e formulare i propri argomenti.

5 Capacità di apprendere
Il corso pone grande attenzione allo sviluppo delle capacità di lettura critica dei testi filosofici. Gli studenti saranno invitati a riconoscere argomenti filosofici e a darne una ricostruzione razionale che mostri l’importanza dell’argomento nel dibattito. In tal modo saranno acquisistati gli strumenti che permettono loro di approfondire altre tematiche filosofiche e di fare filosofia in modo autonomo.

The course is designed as an introduction to the philosophy of mind, focusing on theories that have been developed in the late twentieth and early twentyfirst century.

Students who are not able to be present at the course will prepare the same textbook. In order to assist students who cannot assist the lectures, slides and audio-registrations of the lectures are provided at the course-site on elly.unipr.it. Students who cannot assist the lectures are cordially invited to contact the professor or come to see him during office hours in order to discuss topics related to the course or the exam modalities.

Teaching methods

Lezioni e discussioni in aula. Inoltre ci saranno degli incontri nel tardo pomeriggio (“ora di approfondimento”) che permettono di discutere e approfondire ulteriormente i temi discussi nel corso e di chiedere ulteriori spiegazioni. Le ore di approfondimento si terranno di sera per invitare anche gli studenti che altrimenti non potrebbero frequentare il corso per motivi di lavoro. La partecipazione è volontaria.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of a written part with short questions, and, a few days later, an oral part with more general questions. Each part weighs 50% of the final grade.


The grades range from 18 (minimum) to 30 e lode. The criteria for the assignment of the grade are:

30 e lode: excellent, profound knowledge, excellent expressive capacities, complete comprehension of the relevant concepts and arguments
30: very good, complete and adequate knowledge, good discursive capacities with respect to the topic of the course.
27-29: good, an acceptable degree of knowledge, acceptable discursive capacities with respect to the topic of the course.
24-26: mediocre level of knowledge, though incomplete and not not always correct.
21-23: basic, though superficial knowledge. Inadequate discursive competences with respect to the topic of the course.
18-21: sufficient
Below 18: insufficient. Very imcomplete knowledge, presentation unclear, incomplete comprehension of the basic concepts and arguments.
