Learning objectives

The objective of this course is to provide students with the tools necessary for analytical approach to Rome’s history: from its origins to the “noiseless fall” of the pars Occidentis.

Course unit content

The first part of the course (= Part A, 6 CFU: 14.02-16.03.17) will be dedicated to issues of chronology, historical geography, epigraphy, and historiography. Classes will alternate between more expressly event-based lectures to others focused on topics of a more wide-reaching methodological basis.

The second part of the course (= Part B, 6 CFU: 11.04-11.05.17) will have the format of a single-topic seminar: addressing Rome’s history from Julius Caesar's death to the death of Augustus, this monographic focus will be dedicated to a complete reading and commentary of the Res Gestae Divi Augusti.

PART A) GENERAL COMPONENT
Archaic Latium and the birth of Rome; issues of the historiography on Rome’s origins; the kings and the monarchical institutions; the Republic and the Roman constitution; the civil wars and the end of the Republic; the Augustan principate; the first two centuries of imperial history; the third-century crisis; the great reformers: Aurelian, Diocletian, Constantine; the fourth century and Christian Rome; Rome and the barbarians; the dissolution of imperial authority in the West.

PART B) SPECIAL TOPICS
The Roman Revolution and the RGDA.

Assessment methods and criteria

Part A (6 CFU) - Students who can attend lessons: OPTIONAL TEST IN ITINERE (see Bibliography n. 1: Geraci-Marcone) and INTERVIEW;

Part A (6 CFU) - Students who cannot attend lessons: INTERVIEW.

Part B (6 CFU) - Students who can attend lessons: OPTIONAL TEST IN ITINERE (paper or presentation on a topic agreed in advance) and INTERVIEW;

Part B (6 CFU) - Students who cannot attend lessons: INTERVIEW.

NOTE. It is not possible to deal with the Part B exam without having done that of Part A. Instead, it is possible to deal with the two modules in the same exam session.

A fail is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course, the inability to express oneself adequately, by a lack of autonomous preparation, the inability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts, as well as an inability to make independent judgments. A pass (18-23/30) is determined by the student’s possession of the minimum, fundamental contents of the course, an adequate level of autonomous preparation and ability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts, as well as an acceptable level of ability in making independent judgments. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the student who produces evidence of a more than sufficient level (24-25/30) or good level (26-27/30) in the evaluation indicators listed above. Higher scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded on the basis of the student’s demonstration of a very good or excellent level in the evaluation indicators listed above.
