Tuition fees

The annual overall amount is euro 878.50, plus Right to Education regional tax and stamp duty and is divided in two installments:

  • the 1st INSTALLMENT includes: Right to Education regional tax euro 140.00, stamp duty euro 29.24, tuition fees euro 439.25.
  • the 2nd INSTALLMENT includes: tuition fees euro 439.25 plus possibile INCREASE depending on the income documentation submitted ON-LINE.
    In case the student fails to present the income documentation the maximum INCREASE will be applied (F3).

Admission requirements

To be admitted to the Advanced Degree course, students must possess a secondary school diploma according to the requirements of article 6, paragraph 3, of Ministerial Decree 270/04. A basic knowledge of maths, physics, chemistry and biology are required which can be acquired from secondary school programmes and sufficient for effective learning of the teachings imparted in the first years. The level of preparation will be assessed by tests to be performed normally before the beginning of the scholastic year, and courses organised, to make up for any gaps in academic preparation, with the procedures established by the Academic Regulations for the course.

Final examination, if any

The final test is the preparation of a thesis originally handled by the student under the guidance of a teacher who acts as rapporteur of the Faculty. The thesis consists of a compilation work of gathering data and critical evaluation of scientific literature on a subject related to curricular disciplines. The thesis can consist also in carrying out laboratory work on subjects related to the curricular disciplines in order to prepare a paper containing original experimental results. The work related to the thesis can be done as well in the departments of the Faculty or in other facilities of the University or at public or private companies, Italian or foreign, according to standards established by the Faculty Council in compliance with the regulations the University.

Educational and professional goals and course description

The aim of the Advanced Degree Course in Pharmacy is to provide the graduate with the scientific bases and theoretical and practical preparation necessary for practicing the profession of pharmacist. The above course consists in an adaptation of the pre-existing degree course required for performing the activities dictated by the EEC directive 85/432, which governs the profession of pharmacist at European level; therefore, the duration is one five-year cycle, according to Ministerial Decree 270/04 and includes six months of in-service training at a pharmacy open to the public or hospital pharmacy. The curriculum mainly provides the preparation required for dispensing prescription and over-the-counter medicines, as well as healthcare products (cosmetics, dietetic, herbalist and medical-healthcare products). Graduates with Advanced Degree in Pharmacy will acquire scientific, laboratory and advanced legal competences in the healthcare field in order to become a drug and medicines expert able to act as a fundamental element of connection between patient, doctor and public healthcare. This collaboration with healthcare services may include monitoring the use of medicines in the territory and assessment of therapy value (pharmacoeconomics), as well as indications related to the safety of medicines (pharmaco- vigilance). The pharmacist will act as a healthcare educator for correct use of medicines and as an additional information resource for doctors within the context of creating pharmaceutical policies. The training of the professional pharmacist figure guarantees the acquisition of multidiscipline knowledge of medicines and substances used to fabricate them. In particular,, in-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical technology and physical, chemical, biological and microbiological control of medicines, knowledge of the effects and metabolism of medicines, as well as the action of toxic substances, advanced knowledge of the structure and activity at a cell and systemic level of medicines, knowledge of the scientific investigation methods used to assess data concerning medicines in order to be able to supply appropriate information, knowledge regarding national and EU laws which govern industry activities, are provided. The Advanced Degree course in Pharmacy supplies the competences and learning abilities necessary to undertake the Specialisation School in Hospital Pharmacy and the basic cognitive instruments for continuous updating of knowledge, as required by current laws and regulations for healthcare professions. The curriculum includes academic activity required by the LM-13 class, including laboratory practices, and takes into account the portion of the total hours which must be reserved for personal study or other individual type of academic activity. Graduates will be capable of using, in written and oral forms, at least one European Union language in addition to Italian.

Knowledge and understanding

The graduate from the Advanced Degree Course named Pharmacy must have acquired the knowledge necessary for the exercise of specific professional activities such as dispensing of medication, counseling the client, pharmacovigilance, verification of safety requirements, quality and efficacy of medicines and health products, as required by the WHO and by national and European level. The graduate has to demonstrate the capacity to understand the problems inherent the drug-regulatory and legislative aspects of the pharmacy. This capability is achieved through a training marked by the initial acquisition of knowledge in the areas of basic science (mathematics, physics, general and inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry) and the subsequent study of the biological disciplines (biology, biochemistry, botany, anatomy, physiology). Drug related (pharmacotherapy, toxicology, pharmacognosy), pharmaceutical chemistry disciplines (medicinal chemistry and toxicology, analysis of medicinal products) and technologycal disciplines (pharmaceutical technology, drug delivery, pharmaceutical legislation), as well as those related to medical conditions (pathology, microbiology) are teached as well. The aim is a fruitful development of the profession as expert of drugs, neutraceuticals, dietary preparations, cosmetics, herbal products and in general, health products. The inclusion in the curriculum of supplementary activities for the organization of the pharmacy as a company, pharmacoeconomics, clinical and biochemical aspects of biotechnological medicines is a prerequisite for the formation of a professional to date and ready to meet the varied demands of real health. The verification of the achievement of expected results will be made through specific exercises and written tests and / or oral.

Applying knowledge and understanding

The graduate in Advanced Degree Course named Pharmacy, thanks to the theoretical-practical multidisciplinary education acquired through laboratory courses and verified by practical tests and written and oral exams, is able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in the chemical-analytical-technological field to set up galenical products and to control the dosage forms according to official Pharmacopoeias. The specific skills required for monitoring the correct use of medicines and healthcare products and to provide optimal management of Pharmacy are acquired by validating exams of characterizing disciplines related to the pharmacological-toxicological, pharmaceutical chemistry and technology legislative fields.

Making judgements

The graduates in the Advanced Degree Course named Pharmacy must be able to move with professionalism within the various aspects of the pharmaceutical world, knowing in action
 decision points with a sense of autonomy and responsibility. In particular, he has the skills-ethical and legal knowledge to dispense medications properly and judiciously taking into account the specific patient needs and recommending to the appropriate self-medication and products health (health foods, cosmetics, health and medical-surgical).

Communication skills

The graduate in the Advanced Degree Course denominated Pharmacy has the ability to clearly and willingly dialogue with the patient and competently speak to the doctor or healthcare facility contacts, thus performing an essential connection role. They are able to provide healthcare advice and know how to use, where necessary, a foreign language (English) in relation with users and in managing the pharmacy. The professional in-service training activity, performed full-time for a semester and verified by professionals indicated by the Professional Board, represents the instrument for acquiring these specific competences.

Learning skills

The graduates in the Advanced Degree Course denominated Pharmacy, thanks to their academic programme and the personalexperiences resulting from writing a thesis based on updated subjects and originality, learned a study method that lets them able to independently increase their scientific-cultural background through continuous updating of knowledge governed by current laws (public and private university courses, post graduate education) and through in-depth personal study. Their curricular education lets them undertake courses of the Specialisation School in Hospital Pharmacy and access post-graduate Level II Master Degree and PhD.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Advanced Degree course in Pharmacy may perform the professional activities cited in directive no. 2005/36/EC, in particular, after achieving the state qualification to practice the profession of pharmacist, perform the profession and handle the preparation, control, storage and distribution of medicines in public (as manager or employee) or private (as owner, manager or employee) pharmacies and in hospital facilities (hospitals, private clinics and rest homes). In addition they may work in parapharmacies in the territory and as sales clerks in retail establishments. They may cover the role of level I and II manager after obtaining the specialisation diploma in Hospital Pharmacy and work in offices and Pharmaceutical Departments of the Local Public Healthcare Service or public institutions. They may also work as Pharmacist in charge of preparing the pharmaceutical forms of medicines; fabrication and control of medicines; storage, preservation and distribution of medicines in the wholesale selling phase; in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, parapharmaceutical companies or laboratories, in bromatological and product analysis laboratories. They may work diffusing information and advice in the medicinal sector, hold positions in government administration, perform research activity at public and private research institutions and teaching activity in secondary schools.
